Matt narrowly misses sub 9 in Roth

Challenge Roth is an iconic race and Matt included it on his race calendar as a chance to see what he was capable of on a fast course, with half an eye on a sub 9 finish and possibly even the Irish record.

A solid race saw Matt just miss out on the 9 hour target, finishing in 9:03:21 and getting carried off to the medical tent for an IV drip. The next day brought good news though as Matt was crowned European Champion for his age group (40-44) and the realisation that in spite of missing his goal time he had executed a very good race.

The more time that has gone on, the more pleased I am with my performance. Although some of the time lost on the run can be explained by me not having my bike legs, it would appear that bike times across the board were slower than previous years…

If you have got a spare couple of hours Matt has written one of his legendary brief and entertaining race reports over on Tritalk.

Next up for Matt is the World Long Distance Championships in Spain at the end of July.
